English — Year 2
This year, your child will continue to build on their literacy skills, becoming more sophisticated readers, writers, and communicators. The focus is on developing a deeper understanding of how texts work—their purpose, structure, and language features. They will explore how authors use language to create meaning, compare different types of texts, and begin to make conscious choices about vocabulary and sentence structure in their own writing. They will also develop more advanced comprehension strategies, including analysing and critiquing texts, and will refine their speaking and presentation skills.
By the end of the year, a child should be able to investigate how interpersonal language choices vary depending on the context and the different roles they take on in interactions. They will explore how language can be used for appreciating texts and providing reasons for preferences. They will use interaction skills when engaging with topics and texts—actively listening to others, receiving instructions, extending their own ideas, speaking appropriately, expressing and responding to opinions, making statements, and giving instructions. They will create, rehearse, and deliver short oral and/or multimodal presentations for familiar audiences and purposes, using text structure appropriate to purpose and topic-specific vocabulary, and varying tone, volume, and pace.
Match Your Manners
Practice how to speak differently to different people. “How would you ask a friend for a pencil? How would you ask a teacher? How would you ask a stranger? What words and tone would you use?”
Group Chat
During family conversations, encourage active listening and turn-taking. “Your sister just shared her opinion. Can you respond to what she said? What do you think about her idea?”
Give a Presentation
Ask them to prepare a short talk about something they’re interested in. “Can you tell us three facts about your favourite animal? Remember to speak clearly and look at your audience.”
